What might be known: Epistemic modality and uncertain contexts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Epistemic modals relativize the truth value of a proposition to some body of knowledge. It is thus reasonable to consider that their truth conditions concern at least as much the attitude of the speaker(s) towards the proposition as the content of the proposition itself. Epistemic modals can be seen as evidential comments on propositions (von Fintel and Gillies 2007). Veltman (1996), Groenendijk et al. (1996) and von Fintel and Gillies (2007) have shown that this particular contribution is better accounted for within a dynamic semantic implementation than in terms of more traditional (i.e. static) truth conditions. Albeit insightful, the dynamic formalization of epistemic modals causes a double problem. First declarative sentences containing an epistemic operator such as the one in (1) become non-informative1—even though they are defined as meaningful.

A Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Study of Epistemic Modality Markers in Linguistics Research Articles
Epistemic modality devices are believed to be one of the prominent characteristics of research articles as the commonly used genre among the academic community members. Considering the importance of such devices in producing and comprehending scientific discourse, this study aimed to cross–culturally and cross-linguistically investigate epistemic modality markers as an important subcategory...
متن کاملEpistemic Modality for Dummies∗
Epistemic modals are interesting in part because their semantics is bound up both with our information about the world and with how that information changes as we share what we know. Given that epistemical modals are dependent in some way on the information available in the contexts in which they are used, it’s not surprising that there is a minor but growing industry of work in semantics and t...
متن کاملDynamics of Epistemic Modality
A dynamic semantics for epistemically modalized sentences is an attractive alternative to the orthodox view that our best theory of meaning ascribes to such sentences truth-conditions relative to what is known. I will demonstrate that a dynamic theory about might and must offers elegant explanations of a range of puzzling observations about epistemic modals. The first part of the story offers a...
متن کاملCertamente and Sicuramente. Encoding Dynamic and Discursive Aspects of Commitment in Italian
Commitment should be understood as a dynamic and discursive category. This raises some important questions for the theory of grammar: to what extent do languages encode the dynamic and discursive aspects of commitment? At what level of analysis does this encoding take place? Which markers encode these aspects? In order to answer some of these questions two Italian adverbs expressing strong comm...

The weak epistemic modal operators might, possible, likely, and probable display embedding behaviors and scope interactions that are interestingly different from their logically stronger counterparts must and certain. I present two problematic sets of facts about these operators which have not received much attention in the literature. The first is that weak epistemic modals embed freely under ...
